Horse racing betting sites UK compared on their BOG terms

Racing terms from 5 UKGC-licensed bookmakers are compared below. They are bet365, Virgin Bet, Betfred, Paddy Power and William Hill. All 5 offer BOG on UK and Irish horse racing. Under BOG, a winning fixed-price bet is settled at the starting price (SP) when the SP is bigger.

Start times, eligibility and daily caps differ. BOG by bookmaker, from each brand’s own racing terms:

• bet365.com: betting under Hillside (UK Sports) ENC, number 55148, and casino under Hillside (UK Gaming) ENC, number 55149.
• virginbet.com: Virgin Bet Limited, account 54310, with the domain marked as a white label.
• betfred.com: Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, account 39544.
• paddypower.com: PPB Counterparty Services Limited, account 39439 for betting.
• William Hill: WHG (International) Limited, account 39225, as its support page states.

When does BOG apply to a new account?

The table gives each brand’s headline condition. Their terms add these limits:

• Paddy Power: the opt-in is open only to customers whose registration address or country is in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.
• William Hill: the opt-in button sits on the race cards of UK and Irish races and stays switched on until William Hill withdraws the offer. It covers UK and Irish residents betting on its website or apps, not in shops or by phone.
• Betfred: it may leave customers out under internal risk policies or staking restrictions, and says it tells them separately.
• bet365: its promotion terms ask customers to log in to see the offers available to the account.
• Virgin Bet: its help article asks for more than £25 staked in the previous 7 days, on a rolling basis.
• Once that is met, Virgin Bet’s BOG applies from the next login the following day.

Virgin Bet’s 2 pages do not match. Its offer rules, last updated on 31 March 2023, carry the £50,000 daily cap and set no £25 qualifier, while the help article sets that qualifier and names no cap. The 31 March update also moved the start from 9.00am to 10.00am, from 4 April 2023.

bet365’s help page differs from its promotion terms in 2 ways. It sets no new-and-eligible-customer condition, and it covers UK and Irish greyhound racing, where the promotion terms limit BOG to UK and Irish horse racing. Ask bet365 support which wording governs the account, and keep the reference.

What do these bookmakers offer beyond BOG?

Below, each of the 5 is pictured by its homepage and then set out by what BOG doesn’t cover: the sports welcome bet, racing promotions, payment rules and the Gambling Commission’s enforcement record. Offer, promotion and payment terms in this section come from each brand’s pages, read from 28 September to 1 October 2026, and penalties from the Commission’s notices.

bet365, where boosts keep BOG

The sportsbook’s new-customer banner reads “Bet £10 & Get £30 in Free Bets”. Minimum odds and the bet and payment exclusions sit in the full offer terms, worth opening before the first stake. On racing, Each Way Extra terms shift whenever non-runners change the standard place terms, and a Winnings Boost on a win or each-way bet settles at the boosted price or the BOG starting price without the boost, whichever is bigger.

Apple Pay, Google Pay, debit cards and Pay by Bank each take between £5 and £20,000 per deposit, Trustly up to £25,000, and a Verified PayPal account £25 to £5,500. bet365 aims to process a debit-card withdrawal within 2 hours and lists 1-4 hours, though some stretch to 2 banking days, while bank transfer and Trustly withdrawals go up to £100,000.

Both Hillside licensees settled with the regulator in decisions dated 4 April 2024, for £239,085 on the betting side and £343,035 on the casino side, paid as settlements rather than fines. The review had followed a March 2022 compliance assessment and found failings on money laundering and on customer interaction.

Virgin Bet and the Next Off racing strip

A new member’s sports bet of £10 or more, at odds of 1.5 or bigger and settled within 14 days, earns £20 in sportsbook free bets and £10 for Bet Builder, with virtuals excluded. Players have 7 days to accept the free bets, which are valid for 7 days, and stakes aren’t returned.

A Horse Racing Next Off strip on the homepage links each upcoming race to its card. Withdrawals are free. Virgin Bet aims to sign one off inside 24 hours, after which bank transfers need 2-3 working days, 5 at the outside. No regulatory action is recorded against Virgin Bet Limited, licensed for casino and betting since 21 May 2019.

Betfred and its racing promotions

To qualify for the sports welcome, a new customer deposits by debit card and places a £10-plus first bet on sports at Evens (2.0) or bigger, settled within 7 days. Within 24 hours of settlement, £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets arrive, both expiring after 7 days.

From 08:00 daily, a win single, or the win part of an each-way bet, that finishes 2nd in a selected race earns a free bet worth as much as £10, valid for 48 hours. Extra Place Races take each-way singles and multiples but not ante-post, and on 1 October listed 7 of the next day’s races, at Newcastle, Ascot and Gowran Park. Multiply Your Odds pays 3x the odds on a Lucky 15 with one winner, 4x on a Lucky 31 and 5x on a Lucky 63, as cash, provided every selection runs.

Totepool bets made on the site enter the Tote’s pool without limits, and Tote bets that can’t be pooled are settled at a fixed price on foreign Tote returns, capped at £250,000 per person a day. Linking a Rewards4Racing account earns 1 point per £1 staked on sports.

Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, which runs betfred.com, agreed a £900,000 settlement published 30 June 2026, after the regulator found too little automated checking for signs of harm and flagged accounts left 7 days before a second review. In one case the notice cites, £17,900 went in under 24 hours with no further contact from the operator. In October 2025 it drew a £240,000 fine over slot games that broke technical standards, for example by celebrating losses as wins, and a £2.87m fine in 2022 was imposed for social-responsibility failings alongside anti-money-laundering ones.

Paddy Power: free racing streams with a funded account

New UK and Irish customers using code YSKAST get a £30 free bet, valid for 30 days, for a £5-plus qualifying bet priced at Evens or longer and settled before 23:59 GMT on 1 December 2026. The deposit has to come by Apple Pay, a debit card or Pay by Bank, since e-wallets don’t count, and full-cover bets such as Lucky 15s, Yankees and Trixies are excluded. BOG doesn’t apply to any bet placed wholly or partly with a free bet.

A funded account is enough to stream UK, Irish, American, South African and Indian racing. French, UAE, German, Mauritian and Latin American races unlock only after £1 is staked on that race, as a £1 single or a £0.50 each-way bet. Daily Extra Place terms are online-only and cover pre-race win and each-way bets from after the final declaration stage.

The free Eliminator game pays its jackpot to whoever picks all 6 winners, shared equally if several do. Withdrawals to Apple Pay or via Pay by Bank have a £0.01 minimum and arrive at once, while PayPal, Skrill and Neteller start at £5 and take 4-24 hours.

On 17 December 2025, 4 Betfair and Paddy Power licensees, PPB Counterparty Services among them, agreed to pay £2,000,000 between them. The licence review that followed an April and May 2024 compliance assessment found failings in social-responsibility controls on remote customer interaction.

William Hill and its Visa Direct withdrawals

Promo code R30, open to new UK customers until 31 December 2026, turns a £10-plus first deposit followed by a £10 single from the main balance at 1/2 or bigger into three £10 free bets. Each must be used whole on a non-virtual sports market within 7 days. Deposits by Apple Pay, PayPal, NETELLER, Skrill and 5 other listed methods don’t qualify.

William Hill treats a Winnings Boost on a BOG race as bet365 does, paying whichever is bigger of the two prices. Visa Direct enables 4-hour withdrawals, and while minimums vary by method, a request for the whole balance goes through below them, though it may need a call to Customer Services.

The Commission’s 7 August 2025 penalty of £82,687 on WHG (International) Limited was for failing to identify individual customers who held accounts with more than one group company. The licensee had found and reported the breach itself, and the notice records its remedial action and co-operation.

What place terms apply to each-way bets?

An each-way bet is 2 bets of equal stake, one to win and one to place. Tattersalls Rule 3 sets the standard terms. bet365 and Paddy Power print the same terms in their own racing rules. Betfred’s racing rules give the 1/5 line to non-handicap races of 8 or more runners only, and frame the list as general terms for UK racing.

• Terms follow the number of runners under starters orders, so non-runners can drop a race into a lower band.
• An 8-runner race that loses 1 runner settles as a 7-runner race, at 1/4 odds for 2 places.
• bet365 caps the place stake at the win stake.
• Paddy Power’s standard terms apply where no extra-places promotion is running.
• Its example of an extra-places race is 5 or 6 places at 1/5 in a handicap of 16 or more runners.
• bet365 says boosted places may come with the fraction cut to 1/5 instead of 1/4.
• bet365 voids Each Way Extra bets when runners fall to the number of places offered, or fewer.
• Betfred settles place-only markets on the original number of runners, with deductions after non-runners.

Check the place fraction as well as the number of places before an extra-places bet. At the same price, 1/5 odds pay less per place than 1/4.

Worked example of an each-way settlement

Take a £5 each-way bet at 10/1 in a non-handicap with 8 runners. The stake is £10 in total. Place terms are 1/5 odds for 3 places.

At 1/5 of 10/1, the place part is settled at 2/1. Each result then pays as follows:

1. Win part: £5 at 10/1 returns £55, made up of £50 profit and the £5 stake back.
2. Place part: £5 at 2/1 returns £15, which is £10 profit with the stake returned.
3. If the horse wins, both parts pay and £70 comes back on the £10 staked.
4. If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, the win part loses and £15 comes back.
5. If it finishes 4th or worse, both parts lose the full £10.

A Rule 4 deduction reduces both parts, because Rule 4(C) covers win and place bets alike. Work the sum through at the race’s own place fraction before staking.

How much does Rule 4 take after a withdrawal?

Rule 4(C) applies when a price is taken on race day and a horse is then withdrawn. The deduction follows the withdrawn horse’s odds at official notification.

Further rules on withdrawals, from Tattersalls and Paddy Power:

• With 2 or more withdrawals, the total deduction stops at 90p in the £.
• Stakes on the withdrawn horse are refunded.
• Bets at SP are unaffected unless there was no time to form a new market.
• A bet struck after the market has re-formed takes no deduction for the earlier withdrawal. If a horse then comes out of the re-formed market, the deduction uses its price in that market.
• If only 1 runner would remain, the walkover voids every bet on the race.
• Paddy Power prints the same deductions as a percentage of winnings, though 4 of its bands begin at other prices: 13/8 against 8/5, 15/8 against 9/5, 5/2 against 12/5 and 10/3 against 16/5.
• On a combined-horses selection, Paddy Power deducts from winnings at the combined price.

Worked example of a Rule 4 deduction

A £10 win single is struck at 6/1. Then a rival priced at 3/1 is withdrawn. That price falls in the 12/5 to 3/1 band, so 25p in the £ comes off the winnings.

Profit at 6/1 would have been £60. The deduction takes £15, leaving £45 profit and a £55 return with the stake.

Ask the bookmaker for the withdrawn horse’s price at notification if a deduction looks wrong. The band follows that price, not the price of the horse backed.

How does each BOG rule treat a Rule 4 deduction?

A non-runner brings Rule 4 into play on the rest of the field. That changes the price BOG compares.

These 4 sets of terms settle the overlap as follows:

• bet365’s help page: BOG still applies when the SP beats the revised odds after Rule 4.
• Virgin Bet’s rules: the selection is settled after the deduction.
• Betfred: the bigger odds are paid after the deduction is made to the price taken.
• Betfred also excludes races where non-runners make prices revert to SP only.
• William Hill: BOG does not apply if a non-runner makes prices revert to SP.

Compare the settled price in the bet history with the SP after any non-runner. Raise any gap with the bookmaker, quoting its own BOG rule.

How are dead heats settled?

Tattersalls Rule 10 halves the stake on a horse in a dead heat. Full odds apply to the other half. A triple dead heat or more cuts the stake in proportion.

• Betfred’s racing rules halve the stake in the same way, with full odds on the rest.
• Paddy Power divides the stake by the number of runners in the dead heat, at full odds.
• Read that way, a 3-way dead heat at Paddy Power splits the stake by 3.
• If a horse is also withdrawn, Rule 10(b) applies the Rule 4 deduction to winnings from the reduced stake.

Take £10 at 6/1 on a horse that dead-heats for first. Half the stake, £5, stands at full odds and returns £35, and the other half is lost. Query any 2-way dead-heat return that is not half the full payout.

What changes when a bet is ante-post?

An ante-post bet is struck before race day, under separate rules. All 5 BOG concessions above exclude ante-post, bet365 unless its terms state otherwise.

• Betfred takes ante-post bets all-in run or not, so the stake is lost if the selection does not take part. The exception is a horse the stewards compulsorily withdraw at the overnight declaration stage to reduce the field: Betfred voids those bets and returns the stakes.
• Betfred’s Rule 4(c) table covers withdrawals other than ante-post.
• Tattersalls Rule 4(A) covers single ante-post bets struck before 10 a.m. on the day of final declarations.
• Those bets are void if the race is abandoned or declared void, or the entry conditions change.
• They are also void if the venue is altered or a horse is eliminated under BHA schedule 8.
• Accumulative ante-post bets stand at the ante-post price on the remaining horses.
• Early Prices are race-day prices, offered more than 90 minutes before the off.

Betfred applies Tattersalls rules except where its terms set a different one. Read each bookmaker’s ante-post rule before the bet. Where losing the stake on a non-runner is not acceptable, an ante-post bet is the wrong fit.

How can a bookmaker licence be checked?

Remote gambling advertised to consumers in Great Britain needs a Gambling Commission licence. Its public register shows which accounts hold one.

1. Open the register of gambling businesses on the Gambling Commission’s website.
2. Search with the bookmaker’s domain, trading name, business name or account number.
3. Read the account number, account name, head office address and licence status.
4. Match that account number to the one in the bookmaker’s footer or terms.
5. Note the account number and the date of the check.

The Commission last updated the register list on 1 October 2026. It notes that each business supplies its own domain names. Match the account number as well as the domain.
